Hi From San Francisco

Hi!
It's actually pretty cold in SF - I've been wearing jeans and my hoodie. It's pretty nice - lots of hills.
The hotel is really pretty. A bit weird being back with my family but that's to be expected.
We're leaving here tomorrow to start heading down the coast - ultimately to San Diego, before heading back up to LA to fly home. First stop is Morro Bay.
Saw Alcatrz today. You should see all the sea lions on the pier! They moved into the then docks after one of the earthquakes aqnd have stayed there ever since. THere has been removal attempts - including xcapturing and moving every last one to Portland or Seattle. However, within a couple of weeks every one of them (they tagged them) had returned. Now they're allowed to stay.
Hope everyone is well.

Bye From Portland

So, today I leave Portland. I've actually written a five page long blog post but I'll put that up some other time (we're going to see the ducks). I'm sad to be going. It's been really fantastic. Anna is lovely. Lukas is so cute and uttely hilarious. And it's been great to meet Adam who does live up to all the good things I heard about him! hehe.

I thought my suitcase would leave here lighter but it's going to be just as full - I've bought a book, picked up some more. As well as vassrious other things.

Ironically, the book I bought was my Englidh teacher's, David Park, and, after searching NI for a few years, I came to the Best Bookshop Ever in Portland (called Powell's) and found it! Waterstones in Belfast don't have any of his books but Powell's had several and one only printed inthe UK and now out of print!! So strange.

Anyway, missing you all. I fly to an Francisco today to join my family again. I hope to update sometime.

Hello from Oregon

So, I'm in Oregon now. There were a few slight hitches leaving NYC. Firstly, the airline we were flying with had different baggage regulatuions so we had to open luggage and swap some weight around. Then the flight to Las Vegas was delayed. This meant I missed my flight to Oregon. Luckily, I got the next available flight and I arrived about 12 hours later than expected. The flights have been good and it's great to be here in Portland!

Lukas is so cute and it has been great to meet Adam and see Anna after so long! They're so good to me! And, all presents, choclate and letters arrived safely.

The weather is absolutely insane - it's so warm!!! But a good bit cooler today. And I keep finding books I wanna read and I'm reeading one of Anna's called "The Son of God is Dancing" which is about AIDS in Africa with Worldvision. We're going to a book club about it tonight.

Anyway, I think that's all the news. I should be back here soon. A big thanks to my friend whose gonna put this up on my blog for me -you're a star!

Hello Again

So I'm sheltering in New York's fab Public library through a thunderstorm. Ther third since we arrived. Very The Day After Tomrrow. But we've got a Tropical Storm just off the coast.
We've been to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Seen the Bible in here and my sis has spent 2 afternoons covering onyl 2 fllors of Macy's!
I've bought a really pretty book full of wonderful questions, from the library shop here. Oh, and a lovely magnet - "Women like simple things in life... like men". *teehee*
Oh, and I've just got my 18th Birthday Present - a camera! It's really pretty.
Oh, you will never guess who we bumped into at the Circle Line Ferry going to the Statue of Liberty. (Probably only Rose knows these people) Paul, Rosemary, Timmy and Tori - you fly 5000 across the Atlantic Ocean and bump into your mum's best friend's (who we call aunt) sister and family from Helen's Bay near Bangor! Madness!
Hope everyone is well and thanks for your wee comments.
We leave here tomorrow for Las Vegas, and myself for Portland.
I guess I may be in touch soon.

Hello From The Public Library in NYC

Hi everyone!
Been here a day! It's so hot! We've been to the Chyslar building(sp), Empire State, Macy's, Tiffany's, St Patrick's, Broadway, Times Square, Central Park and been up and down Fifth Avenue.
Been on the Subway. We're in a hotel two blocks from Grand Central Station so we arrived through there.
I love this city! It's lovely. Thank goodness for air conditioning though!
I'm missing oyu ll loads and if you don't get an email I ran out of time so sorry!
We can't find anywhere to get the pictures of the camera onto the storing device.
I've smapled a hot dog and a pretzel so it's all good. Oh, and McDonalds' have a sign inside the store saying "Resusitation Equipment Available" - very encouraging!!
There are Starbucks everywhere!
Anyway, that's probably the quikest update I've ever done! But I better go and let mum check her emails etc.
Much love,
Rachxx

Time To Say A Bientot

Well, the suitcases are packed. Mostly ready. I'm wrecked. It doesn't feel like we're going yet. But we are. We're going to the States. Leaving here at 3am tomorrow morning - four hours from now!
.
From Dublin to NYC for four days and then parents and sis go to Las Vegas while I go to Portland. In Portland I'm staying with Anna, Adam and Lukas. Then the family is reunited in San Francisco before driving down to San Diego, then back to LA before flying home. I arrive in Dublin at 3pm on Tuesday 8th August.
.
Prayers would be appreciated for travelling mercies for us all.
.
I'll be getting regular computer access so should be able to keep you reasonably up-to-date. I'll have my phone if the bottom falls out of Saintfield without me (which I somehow doubt) and my email. You'd be more likely to get an email if you send me one!
.
I'll miss you all but I really can't wait to see more of the world and Anna! hehe!
.
Take care & God Bless

A Confession...

I think I'm in love.
.
Sorry, I know I'm in love.
.
The object of my affection is dependable and very pretty.
.
Would you like to see a picture?

And don't blame me - apparently it looks good from others too - apologies for the person wearing the hat though!

.

.

.

Hehe, getting serious now.

.

More and more things are getting booked up - all the hotels are booked up until, and including, San Francisco. We're going to Alcatraz! Which I'm weirdly excited about. We've just got things like packing everything to do still. But at least I've now got a suitcase - baby steps I guess.

.

Anyway - a message to Anna - please please please return my calls!

.

I'll definately blog again before I go (probably!).

If anyone has anything (small, unbreakable and light - I really stress those three) for Anna, I would really really appreaciate it if I could have it by Friday.

Smiles, Beliefs and Convents

Smiles:
.
On August 31st before I entered my second last year of primary school I fell of my bike. I broke my front tooth in half. Since then I've had the filling half re-done over 3 times. But my dentist was horrible and left a big line on it. The last time I'd it replaced was over three years ago. Since the first time I got the other half built up the dentist has never smoothed it out - so I've always had this big line caused by a difference in thickness between the natural tooth and the filling bit.
.
Due to the way they dealt with that front tooth and pretty much everything else I decided to switch dentists to my dad's.
.
My first appointment was this morning. 8:30. I walked out of there at ten to nine (after spending 5 minutes arranging another appointment) and the line had gone. Ok, getting it off was hell - hell to me is a dentist chair - and I am the worst dentist patient ever - I yelp, shake, never have my mouth open enough etc. The new dentist is fantastic and the thing that has plagued my self-confidence for years and years is gone - I can smile without my lips closed again!
.
I'm just really annoyed I didn't switch dentists sooner – and worried the tooth is going to fall out at any minute!! I’ve to go back for a deep filling though. That’ll be real fun…
.
.

Beliefs:
.
There’s a test called the Belief-O-Matic.
.
I took it in 2004 and here are my results:
.
1. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (100%)
2. Orthodox Quaker (97%)
3. Seventh Day Adventist (79%)
4. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (78%)
5. Eastern Orthodox (77%)
6. Liberal Quakers (77%)
7. Roman Catholic (77%)
8. Unitarian Universalism (67%)
9. Reform Judaism (65%)
10. Bahá'í Faith (51%)
11. Sikhism (51%)
12. Orthodox Judaism (46%)
13. Islam (43%)
14. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (42%)
15. Neo-Pagan (37%)
16. Hinduism (35%)
17. Secular Humanism (35%)
18. New Age (30%)
19. Mahayana Buddhism (29%)
20. Theravada Buddhism (29%)
21. Taoism (29%)
22. Jehovah's Witness (24%)
23. Scientology (24%)
24. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (23%)
25. Jainism (22%)
26. New Thought (20%)
27. Nontheist (20%)
.
.

I took it again this week and here are my results:
.
1. Orthodox Quaker (100%)
2. Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants (90%)
3. Mainline - Conservative Christian Protestant (87%)
4. Seventh Day Adventist (77%)
5. Liberal Quakers (74%)
6. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (72%)
7. Bahá'í Faith (70%)
8. Eastern Orthodox (68%)
9. Roman Catholic (68%)
10. Jehovah's Witness (59%)
11. Unitarian Universalism (59%)
12. Islam (54%)
13. Orthodox Judaism (54%)
14. Theravada Buddhism (54%)
15. Mahayana Buddhism (53%)
16. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (51%)
17. Reform Judaism (51%)
18. Jainism (46%)
19. Neo-Pagan (45%)
20. Sikhism (45%)
21. New Age (40%)
22. Taoism (36%)
23. Hinduism (36%)
24. Secular Humanism (35%)
25. New Thought (30%)
26. Scientology (27%)
27. Non-theist (22%)
.
.

So, not much of a difference – the top two are the same, just switched. And conservative Christianity has made a bit of a jump up the table. It would be interested to see what you guys (those of you whose results I have yet to see) get – get answering those questions!
.
.

The Convent
.
Has anyone else tuned in to see this BBC 2 show?
.
The last one was shown tonight there. It was a really good series. Challenging and interesting – to see how those four women got on with their spiritual journey with the nuns. From Victoria, an atheist with an “open marriage”, to Iona, a Christian and entered the convent considering celibacy, all the women highlighted different aspects of faith and daily life – with it’s struggles and pain.
.
It was a refreshing series. Although some of the points made – such as one of the nuns commenting it was your conscience that got you into heaven – didn’t quite sit right with me, I feel I’ve gained from just watching it. It was really interesting to observe the nuns’ lives as they went about their daily business etc.
.
.
Anyway, three blog posts in one – aren’t you a lucky lot!

We always knew this day would come...

Today I was at Andrew and Sharon's wedding. It was a gorgeous day and was really lovely. A fab day for fab people. Some of the highlights:
I think Sharon, in her vows, said "awful wedded husband" rather than "lawful". It was the Andrew's birthday and, when blowing out the candles on his cake, said "I've no wishes left to make" - and that was the start of a very sickly sweet speach! They kissed so long after the "you may now kiss the bride" that the minister, or should I say Pastor as it was a Baptist church ;-), reminded them he'd another wedding on Thursday!
Everyone looked gorgoues and the speaches were all really lovely. I wish I was having the honeymoon they are - Hong Kong, Sydney, Fiji, NZ etc - lucky lucky people! All that pestering in Romania worked!
Ali - you're a star darling - thanks for all that driving you did and for looking after me! What would we do without you?

I feel like a fish

I realise that being the daughter of a non-Orange telephone company employee that I'm saying I'm liking the rival's TV ad but I love this Orange ad.
.
I feel like that isolated fish in the bowl. Only, instead of it raining, there's been a drought for a long time. I'm stuck in that little bowl all alone with the water evapourating and I'm suffocating.
.
I'm sitting here hoping it rains soon so I can feel free again and so I can swim out and stretch.
.
Please let it rain.
.
