Sharing Discoveries (and Why I Blog)
I receive an email every day from a thing called A Word A Day – you can find it in my sidebar if you scroll down a little. Every weekday a new word (on a weekly theme) and a quotation appears in my inbox. I thought I’d share two of my discoveries this week.
Thursday’s word was:
snuggery (SNUG-uh-ree) [noun]
A snug, cozy place.
I want a snuggery! It would have really comfortable chairs and lots of blankets and quilts. There would be cushions scattered all over the place with lots of candles or scented oils. There would maybe be some favourite music playing quietly in the background or a good DVD playing (on mute, with subtitles). There’s a bookcase that’s so crammed with books the shelves are bowing. There would be little or low artificial lighting and there are lots of individual little coasters to place your drink of choice on.
That is my kind of heaven!
This is where you are. In that little nook where I think and can be truly comfortable, where I share what I find funny, inspiring or worthy of some thought or note (or I’m expelling some really random thought from my overactive brain!).
You are invited to come and grab a pillow and sit and listen to my ramblings.
Of course, you don’t have to. This blog is my little place that is my little place. I won’t force you to believe what I believe or agree with everything I say – argue with me if you wish! You aren’t forced to like what I say either. The purpose of my blog is so I can say what I feel I want to say without feeling I’m making anyone read it.
Now, onto that second discovery of the week. The quotation sent to me today was:
I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day; I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
-Edgar Guest, poet (1881-1959)
I love this quotation. So often Christian’s can think of “evangelism” in terms of how many times you ask so-and-so to church or some event. Or how many times you’ve asked someone where they think they’ll spend eternity – I have never asked anyone that question!
I prefer this “definition” of evangelism. I think it is in the everyday seeing a Christian being just that – a Christian – which is so much more effective.
I became a Christian in February 2003 (I think… Gosh! Almost four years!) at an event in my church. That event and what the guy said was certainly a catalyst but I big part of it has always been seeing the wonderful godly people around me. There are several people I could mention and it was their consistent and continual display of patience, love, support and encouragement that spoke more to me than so many sermons I’ve listened to.
So, I would like to try to encourage you (and try to spur myself) to be the sermon out there living for others to see and to walk along side those who you’d like to show Christ to.

Wow!That is amazing and challenging!
I think my snuggery is within the valley's of the Lake District or hopefully someday in the arms of Mr.Right while lying on a comfy sofa watching Pride and Prejudice!*sighs*

Well, I was going to add in a Mr Right to the list! hehe! But, he's not here right now so onward we go, eh?

PS - Pride and Prejudice is definitely one of those included movies. But the new Mr Darcy is definitely the way to go!
okay, I'll leave you all to your snuggery stuff but I'll comment on your thoughts on Evangelism... here is another quote from one of my heroes - Francis of Assisi "Preach the Gospel at all times and if necessary use words"
I do think it is both the presence and proclamation of the Gospel that is needed, not simply one or the other, but both in harmony. In a post-modern culture I think people don't care so much for what we preach but they pay careful attention to how we live out lives. So its important to get that balance (particularly in a place like Norn Iron where there has been so much preaching but very little authentic presence)
Paul, I love that quotation as well!
And as for "particularly in a place like Norn Iron where there has been so much preaching but very little authentic presence" this is so true! Just today I was in Belfast and there was this guy standing in Corn Market giving a full on sermon - I only caught 30 seconds as I walked passed but I don't think I would want to listen to any more...
"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly defend the rights of the poor and needy" Proverbs 31:8-9 (NIV)
With you on the "I'd rather see a sermon"
One thing that annoys me is mission teams that's pure preaching to developing countries, thankfully I haven't come across any in a long time
