Shopping

On Friday I was in a certain chain card and gift type shop when I saw a little magnet display on the cash desk. I'd a look through the magnets. There was George Clooney, Adam Brody (that guy from the OC), Brad Pitt, that other guy from the OC (called Ryan, I don't see his appeal but some people think he's cute) and there was even Marilyn Monroe, among various other attractive actors.
.
However, I really couldn't understand one choice... Daniel O'Donnell. I kid you not. Who on earth would place Daniel O'Donnell along with the likes of George Clooney, Adam Brody and Brad Pitt?!
.
I have also been shopping this weekend for my formal dress. I got one yesterday - it's lovely! It's a burgundy sort of colour with flower embroidery. It is strapless, but it fits so well I don't feel that self-conscious about it! I do have straps I can get attached to it though. (Any of you far-flung readers who want to see a picture - let me know!)
.
Been really busy again and haven't been feeling too good but it'll soon be half term...! I've got the dentist on Thursday! Arrrrgghhh!
.
Hope you all have a good week.

I Think an Update is Due…

When I say this week has been busy, I really mean it! Here’s what I got up to this week:
.
My To Do list was like this last weekend.
.
Monday
School as normal (out of the house at 8am and home for 4pm) and then on Monday night from 6.30-9.00pm I was at Girls’ Brigade. I really love the paper making we’re doing there.
.
Tuesday
School as normal again. Then, instead of going to help out at Anchor Boys (from 6-7.15pm) I went to do my RSA word processing exam – Stage 2 Part I and Part II. I learned I was doing the exam that night the week before! Dad picked me up from school and I was able to get changed in less than ten minutes in order to be where my exams were for 4.30pm, the Shankill Road. In between the exams I was really hungry so popped across the road (in the dark) to get something to eat in a garage – my parents were not at all impressed at me going out on my own! The exams weren’t too bad. I know I’ve lost two marks in one exam (I think I can lose up to six and get a distinction, 15 and still pass). I was home for 9.30pm.
.
Wednesday
School as normal and then psychology class leaving the house at 6pm and getting back at 10pm. My psychology coursework idea seems to have been accepted – just trying to work out the logistics of it all (it’s going to be on memory, hopefully) and sifting through mountains and mountains of research.
.
Thursday
School until 2.10pm today – I get two afternoons off a week on “home study” if my timetable permits. I discovered a letter containing very bad news… My dentist wants to see me. And dad just decided to go ahead and schedule an appointment! It’s February 1st. I’m dreading it already! I really hate the dentist… I know prevention is better than cure but I’d really rather just sleep through even the check ups! I am such a wimp, I know!
.
On Thursday evening I was at a Girls’ Brigade meeting – sorting out what to do for the display in March. All very fun. So I was out between 8pm and half ten!
.
Friday
I get out at 1pm on a Friday – my Friday timetable seriously rocks, with only two hours of classes. Having said that, this Friday I had the most disturbing conversation in theology in the History of the World. You have no idea – it was about spiked drinks, physiological reactions, things you do not need to hear from a teacher and awful innuendos…
.
But, on Friday I had what was keeping me sane all week. Some of you will know I have back problems and my back gets very sore – I’m on a waiting list for the physiotherapist – and one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to stop biting my nails. So, on Friday I had a little pampering session of a manicure and a back massage. It was so amazing! Definitely what I needed. The only drawback was that I can’t have one every day!
.
Saturday
My weekend To Do list looked like this.
.
I slept in until noon (I was wrecked – after that week and little sleep due to nightmares each night can you honestly blame me?). I accompanied my mum to Asda and took my dad to the pub. My aunt returned home from America after a nice long holiday. Before she left she asked if there was anything I’d like her to bring me back – I said if she saw any dark chocolate M&Ms to get me a packet, sis said peanut better M&Ms and we both said if she could squeeze in a box of Lucky Charms… She brought me twenty packets of dark M&Ms, twenty peanut butter ones for sis and six boxes of Lucky Charms!!

.

I was also able to put all my teddys (which were stuck in a suitcase!) up on a new shelf in my bedroom. Aren't they pretty?
.
I spent most of the evening futtering about. I watched several movies – Copycat, one about Renee Z moving back home to look after her terminally ill mum, and one about terrorists in New York with Bruce Willis imposing martial law and Denzel Washington saving the day. CopyCat is an awesome movie – one of my favourites and the Renee Z one made me cry.
.
Sunday
I got up in time for church and went. It was a good service – about how God uses ordinary people for awesome things. I also saw the butterfly that lives in my church again. I didn’t see it last week – it always looks like it’s about to die as it descends to my windowsill for the sermon before fluttering off back up to the gallery just before it’s over. I think it may be called Lucy.
.
When I got home from church I made over two dozen little fairy cakes with icing and jelly babies on them. If you ever want to see food disappear at the speed of light… take it to youth fellowship. Seriously. I think Paul ate seven and Stephen ate at least four too. How do guys eat so much?! Oh well, baking relaxes me and I wasn’t really stupid – I kept some at home for me to have during the week!
.
Evening church and YF were good – plenty to think about. I really love the people who make up the church! It’ll be so sad to have to leave them!
.
My To-Do list now looks like this. I’m learning to accept that I don’t have to get everything done – that things can wait and I don’t have to stress as much as I used to do! This is such a breakthrough for me! It feels SO good!
.
Over the past while something I’ve really been thinking about it how much time I fritter away futtering about on the internet – checking to see if friends’ blogs have been updated and what have you. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time now – it’s such a waste of time that could be far better spent! This week I haven’t had the time I usually have and I didn’t miss all the time I usually spend arseing about online. And I’ll definitely be thinking about it as I think about lent.
.
Anyway, my solution to this time waster has been to set up an account over at bloglines – I have added all the blogs I read to the list and I just need to check there to see if they’ve been updated! Hopefully that’ll help cut down on random time wastage! I guess we’ll wait and see.
.
This week I’ve also been good about using the free periods I get during school time. This has been a real help as I’ve had so much on in the evenings – if I continue the working when I’m free mentality I should even be able to have more free time! I’m learning that every little counts – that even though I may only have ten minutes to do something in that ten minutes spent there is ten minutes I won’t have to do later on. I’m still messing around and stuff in school – I’ve only got six more months (less, really, if you count study leave) of being able to daily spend time with people (and, yes, I do see that as a really good thing with some people! But there are some people I love talking to!).
.
The only magazine I read is the Time Magazine. I really have one period of the week almost set aside to read it – the last period before I leave on a Friday. I love the quotations of the week and the facts and figures. One figure I read this week was of 5100 letters the US sent out to people who had left the military in an effort to try to get them back in service, 270 (I think) were sent to people who had died on active service – that must have been devastating, especially as the letters were sent out between Christmas and New Year.
.
Every year the Time magazine has a person of the year. And I thought I’d tell you who the person of 2006 was. You were. Congratulations – you were the person of 2006! The year where you let yourself be heard – in blogs, on YouTube, through Myspace or Facebook (or both!), by writing podcasts or making movies, by reviewing books on Amazon. You shaped 2006!
.

“The answer is, you do. And for seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, TIME's Person of the Year for 2006 is you.”

.
Often I think “If I didn’t buy Nestle chocolate would I really make a difference?” or by not supporting a certain store etc. I think we do – the ocean is made of tiny drops and each drop adds to the impact. Buying power is still power. You ARE the difference. Well, you can be – do you want to take that leap?
.
I thought I’d post a couple of pictures of what the den looks like after all that tidying. See here, here (the computer and my little workstation), here and here (I think there is snuggery potential here!).
.
Most depressing day of the year, statistically, is tomorrow [22nd January]. How are the New Year’s Resolutions going? Or dare I ask? I think mine are going ok! I’m constantly being challenged which is always good! Still, roll on Friday, eh?
.
I hope you guys have a great week – especially those who are waiting for exams or exam results!
.
PS – sorry for the very long post!

Missed Calls, Missed Opportunities

Tonight in Saintfield, at 22:48:14 a call was made in Saintfield. Had that call been answered the person would have received a share of a litre tub of ice cream. But not just any ice cream... Mauds ice cream... And not any type of Mauds... But honeycomb.
.
[A note to my farflung readers: Mauds ice cream is a Northern Irish ice cream that is beyond amazing. I would gladly give up a tub of Ben and Jerries Chocolate fudge brownie for a tub of Mauds Poor Bear ice cream. And Pooh Bear (also called honeycomb) ice cream is where the honeycomb and stuff bees produced is through the ice cream - and if you're unsure of how amazing it tastes I'm sure the crew that were from Colorado (if any of them read this!) will testify to the fact they're drooling right now...]
.
So, whoever missed the phonecall.... You missed a great opportunity!

Delurk!

Hi everyone. This week is annual delurking week - I have a wee sitemeter so I see that I get visitors from far flung places - Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Finland, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany and France. As well as various US and Canadian addresses. I've lots UK addresses too.

So, all who are out there - make yourselves known! Leave a wee comment - I won't bite...

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!

In reverse order…

The Ugly
I bought a magazine on Sunday in an attempt to finish a photography project I need to hand in shortly. (I needed to get fashion photos). The magazine in question is probably the magazine that women read between reading Cosmopolitan and Woman’s Weekly.

There was an article in the magazine which was the “Get Real Guide to Being a Mistress”. I read the article, out of pure curiosity – I was interested to hear what she thought of it, and thought she’d complain about the fact he had to go home to the wife and kids etc (I did skip slightly more… dubious articles!). But, no so much. There were nine points in her get real guide. Two of them were negative – she acknowledged that you will never really spend weekends or holidays with him. Oh, and she did feel a little guilty about the fact she was sleeping with her best friend’s husband!

No wonder the divorce rates are ridiculous! Grrr! The article glamorized being the “other woman” about how you’ll feel more alive, will have the best sex ever and your self esteem will rocket!

Also, the magazine was filled with this season’s “must haves”. There was a necklace for well over £1000 that looked like the plastic jewellery three year olds wear. There was a cushion from Ralph Lauren for (I think somewhere in the ballpark of) £400 – which looks similar to the one I got for £4 (admittedly, without that name on the label!). There were six bags advertised which were to fit into your life – one for the romantic getaway, for the long train journey, for slinging in the sports car, for a boutique hotel break, for the weekend B&B and the business overnighter.

The cheapest was £155. Are You Kidding Me?!

I was on the phone while flicking through the magazine. And we decided there were FAR better uses of that amount of money! Even spending it to stay in a hotel for a night and order a room service breakfast would be amazing! Or visiting friends. Or saving it for summer getaways.

What are we expecting when our media is portraying the you NEED this image?

I actually cannot put into words what I want to say. RAR! I’m sure you’ll know what I’m saying…

The Bad…
I ordered Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller for Christmas. I’ve been recommended it by several people and asked Santa for it. I settled down last night to read the second chapter before going to sleep. It went from Pg 20 to Pg 86 through to Pg 116 then back to Pg 53 where it goes to the end of the book in complete and proper order. Where on earth are Pages 21-52?! Grrr – I was getting into the book and relaxing!

I will be getting another copy sent out from the suppliers which is good. It just thought it was a little strange…

Finally…

The Good
On Monday it was discovered that I had a bank account that had been set up when I was born that we’d long since forgotten about. We didn’t even know who had set it up! I’ll be heading down to the branch in Downpatrick to close the account. But it was a lovely little surprise – my granny (the one who passed away in 2005) had set it up (despite setting up another account for me as well!).

It seems to be such a coincidence because the day before I was discussing what I’d do if I was given that exact sum of money… However, I decided checking into a hotel for a night is a tad to frivolous and I may just put it in my bank account until I need it for something – maybe the summer or uni. It’ll definitely come in handy!

Unfortunately, I’m really not sleeping well – I’m having really bad dreams and stuff. Very fun. And school… If I disappear for the next six months you’ll know why… So much work!! But, despite long rants, oddly ordered books and school stuff I’m doing good – some friends are keeping me sane!

Thank you guys!

Sharing Discoveries (and Why I Blog)

I receive an email every day from a thing called A Word A Day – you can find it in my sidebar if you scroll down a little. Every weekday a new word (on a weekly theme) and a quotation appears in my inbox. I thought I’d share two of my discoveries this week.

Thursday’s word was:

snuggery (SNUG-uh-ree) [noun]
A snug, cozy place.

I want a snuggery! It would have really comfortable chairs and lots of blankets and quilts. There would be cushions scattered all over the place with lots of candles or scented oils. There would maybe be some favourite music playing quietly in the background or a good DVD playing (on mute, with subtitles). There’s a bookcase that’s so crammed with books the shelves are bowing. There would be little or low artificial lighting and there are lots of individual little coasters to place your drink of choice on.

That is my kind of heaven!

This is where you are. In that little nook where I think and can be truly comfortable, where I share what I find funny, inspiring or worthy of some thought or note (or I’m expelling some really random thought from my overactive brain!).

You are invited to come and grab a pillow and sit and listen to my ramblings.

Of course, you don’t have to. This blog is my little place that is my little place. I won’t force you to believe what I believe or agree with everything I say – argue with me if you wish! You aren’t forced to like what I say either. The purpose of my blog is so I can say what I feel I want to say without feeling I’m making anyone read it.

Now, onto that second discovery of the week. The quotation sent to me today was:

I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day; I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.

-Edgar Guest, poet (1881-1959)

I love this quotation. So often Christian’s can think of “evangelism” in terms of how many times you ask so-and-so to church or some event. Or how many times you’ve asked someone where they think they’ll spend eternity – I have never asked anyone that question!

I prefer this “definition” of evangelism. I think it is in the everyday seeing a Christian being just that – a Christian – which is so much more effective.

I became a Christian in February 2003 (I think… Gosh! Almost four years!) at an event in my church. That event and what the guy said was certainly a catalyst but I big part of it has always been seeing the wonderful godly people around me. There are several people I could mention and it was their consistent and continual display of patience, love, support and encouragement that spoke more to me than so many sermons I’ve listened to.

So, I would like to try to encourage you (and try to spur myself) to be the sermon out there living for others to see and to walk along side those who you’d like to show Christ to.

Yes, stealing is wrong, but...

... I couldn't help but steal this from Ms (or is that now Dr?) Contemplative Activist's blog. Now, I haven't mentioned a certain American President or certain war(s) in over a month now! Aren't you proud?
Well, I guess it's back to the beginning with that counting as I tell you all to go and watch the video on the link of that quotation (blogger is being silly today!) created for Martin Luther King day in America.
